Frugals winter 2013

I managed to get my hands on a copy of the Winter 2013 publication of Frugals earlier than usual and I’ve already used 2 of the coupons in there!  Hurry, go find your copy today!  It’s packed full of GREAT coupons to use at local businesses throughout the Delmarva peninsula.

New year = new style?  If so, then head to H&H Furniture in Pocomoke.  They have a large showroom with a wide variety of décor from primitive to modern, including items such as candles, lighting, linens and even appliances.  On the inside front cover, you can save $50 on any furniture or appliance purchase of $500 or more OR 20% off any in stock accessory item.

With the cold weather setting in, your kids might get bored of playing with all their new Christmas gifts.  When they come asking to do something, why not try out Delmarva Trampoline Arena in Delmar?  Fun and fitness for all ages, it’s Maryland’s first indoor trampoline park and offers great family fun as well as birthday/group party accommodations.  Not the jumping kind?  Not to worry…they have softball pitching machines to help pass the time also.

If you have never been to Delmarva Discovery Center in Pocomoke, I highly recommend taking a visit there soon!  My kids LOVE the place, especially the touch tank with creatures local to our waters.  They will be holding their Winter Wonderland Gala on February 16 from 7-10p.  Prices start at just $40.  Perfect for your Valentine’s Day weekend dinner celebration, but also a great way to help support such a great learning tool.

Right next door is the Riverside Grill, Pocomoke’s riverfront restaurant, sister business to the well known Back Street Grill in Salisbury.  On the back cover, you will find several coupons for Riverside Grill, including BOGO 50% off entrée, a FREE appetizer or $3 off your total check.  Don’t have time for a sit deal meal with your busy schedule?  There are lots of coupons for fast food in this edition also; Hardees (multiple locations, page 9), Sonic (Fruitland, page 17), Primo Hoagies (Salisbury, page 12), Subway (Crisfield/Pocomoke, page 27 or Oak Hall/Onley/Exmore, page 42), Domino’s (Pocomoke, page 32) and 1 Fish 2 Fish (Salisbury, page 16).

February is the month of love in case you didn’t already know.  Waterside Inn in Chincoteague (page 40) has a “Lover’s Special” where you can receive a $100 gift certificate for only $80 if you purchase before the end of March.  Why not take your special Valentine there for a weekend getaway at their low off-season rates and enjoy the same full amenities that the tourists do during peak summer travel season!

Looking to take in a movie at not a lot of cost?  Then head to the MarVa Theater in Pocomoke, just down the street from Delmarva Discovery Center and Riverside Grill.  They routinely offer $5 admission on Friday/Saturday night movies , and also offer Classic movies on the second and fourth Thursdays every month.  On page 33, you will find a coupon good for a FREE drink when you purchase a large popcorn.  Don’t worry though, the snack prices aren’t anywhere near what they are at the “big” movie theaters at the malls and won’t break the bank if your entire family wants something to eat.

It might be too cold for the pool, but now is prime hot tub/spa season.  What, no hot tub?  Not to worry, Dover Pools can help!  With several locations in Maryland and Delaware, there’s sure to be one close to you that can help you cure the winter blues.  Don’t forget the coupon on page 4 which can get you a FREE set of steps with any spa purchase.

The rodeo will be in town at the end of January.  If you need some western wear for your night out, check out Chick’s Discount Saddlery.  They have weekly online specials, and even a 20% off any purchase over $20 (page 11).

Need the kids to run off some of their energy?  Send them to Breckenridge Farms in Linkwood where they can play paintball OR have some fun in the ATV park consisting of 3 trail systems over 14 miles long!  You can get 25% off admission using the coupon found on page 15.

While you might not be ready for retirement, certainly you know someone who is.  More and more of those retirees are finding themselves in need of assisted living.  Chesapeake Cove in Crisfield (page 31) is an amazingly beautiful place with exceptional round the clock service and care for your loved one.  There’s NO application fee (limited time only) and if you sign a lease by March 31, you can received HALF OFF your 2nd & 3rd month’s rent!

Have you started looking for child care for the summer months?  Maybe you need somewhere now?  Try Mitchell’s Martial Arts in Salisbury.  They offer an after school program, including pick up at local school, homework and snack time, and martial arts instruction.  Their daycare program employs fully licensed staff, teaches a state approved Pre-K curriculum, and features early drop off, full or half day care with NO forced naps!  It’s a fully secure facility with metal doors and requires ID when picking children up.  With the coupon on page 23, you can save 50% off the registration fees and also get a special discount for summer camp!

It’s officially tax season, the time of year most of us dread!  Need your tax refund fast and cheap?!  Liberty Tax Preparation is your place, and has a coupon valid of $31 off your tax prep fee.  Don’t forget to wave back to the Statue of Liberty waving at you as you drive by.  Some find their tax refund helpful to buy larger items they need, like a new car.  If that’s the case, check out Buchanan Subaru in Pocomoke.  Not ready to car shop yet?  Consider them for your next vehicle servicing.  An oil change is only $14.95 with the coupon on page 35.  Need some work that’s going to cost a bit more, then use the 20% off any service over $100.

If you’re looking for something educational, check out the 12th annual Eastern Shore Heritage Celebration (page 42) at Eastern Shore Community College in Virginia on February 23 from 10a-3p.  There’s food, live music, children’s activities, lectures, artists and other exhibits, and admission is FREE!  Or, you could attend the Frontier:  The War of 1812 ballet (page 37) put on by the Ballet Theatre of Maryland at the MarVa Theater in Pocomoke on February 9 at 2p & 7p.

Spring will soon be in the air, and spring means flowers and prom to many high schoolers in our area.  I remember my senior prom like it was yesterday.  Russell’s Formal & Bridal in Parksley, VA (page 43) have top name brand gowns in many styles and colors available.  Special ordering is available, as well as “dress registration” for MD/VA schools.  You can also get FREE alterations on current gowns AND a FREE pair of earrings with any current gown purchase.  We all know the flowers help accent the outfit, and Four Seasons Florist in Chincoteague (page 42) is a great place to help you do just that.  With 70 years of combined experience, they are sure to have the perfect flowers for your special occasion.  Don’t forget the 20% off any one item coupon in this Frugals edition.

Many of our local fire departments are purely based on volunteers.  This means they also rely heavily on donations from the communities they serve to help maintain their equipment, pay for training, and occasionally purchase new equipment.  Because many of us hate the old-fashion door-to-door soliciting for monetary donations, several departments have come up with fun alternatives to help them earn money.  For example, Parksley Volunteer Fire Company has their Boat & Bucks giveaway on June 8th (page 41) where you can win a 2013 Caroline Skiff DLV 19’.  Only 1000 tickets are sold, and even if you aren’t the lucky winner of the boat, there’s also drawings for $250 cash every 15 minutes and 50/50 drawings also.  Tickets are $40 each for all this fun which also includes all you can eat & drink as well as entertainment from 6-10p.  The Girdletree Volunteer Fire Company has a Cash Bike Bash on June 1 (page 36), which has many of the same features as the Parksley event, except a Harley Davidson motorcycle is the grand prize!  You can order tickets online using code FRUGALS and get 3 tickets for $100 (normally $40 each).

New in 2013, Frugals is organizing Cash Mob events throughout the Eastern Shore at some of your favorite places to shop.  Its main purpose is to support local businesses, because it’s no secret that many are suffering from these tough economic times, but the consumer also wins because they get awesome deals available only for a short period of time, similar to Black Friday sales!  To find out about the Cash Mob events, simply “like” Frugals on Facebook and send an email to info@frugals.biz to request to be added to their weekly email blasts.  If you snooze, you lose!
