Frugals fall 2012 publication

Fall is my favorite time of the year, for many reasons, but mainly because there are SO many great family activities around here to do, and for little to no cost!

Breckenridge Farms in Linkwood, MD is offering a $2 discount on admission to their 9+ acre corn maze.  But, they also have a pick your own pumpkin patch and hay rides.  One of my kids favorite place to visit is Adkins Farm Market in Salisbury.  They have a BOGO free admission to their corn maze/play area.  They also have a fall decorating bundle for $25, which includes ½ bale straw, 1 bundle of corn stalks, 1 large pumpkin, 2 small pumpkins, gourds, and 2 mums.  But hurry, these places close for the season at the end of October.  There’s a new garden store just down the road from me, and I can’t wait to stop there, Pop’s Garden & Hardware in Princess Anne.  They have pumpkins and mums for fall, but will also have Christmas trees and wreaths when the time nears.  But, they also have year round hardware & equipment rentals available.  Check out the 15% off coupon (with purchase) located on page 28.

Because Christmas is nearing, that means there are tons of upcoming craft shows in the area.  The 26th annual Christmas Craft Fair sponsored by the Quota International of Salisbury will be held on Oct 27-28 at the Civic Center.  A Christmas Craft Expo at the Ocean City convention center will be held on Nov 3 & 4.  You can get $1 off adult admission with the coupon on page 37 and be entered in a drawing for a $300 shopping spree!  Berlin hosts a Victorian Christmas starting on November 23 and running through Jan 1.  Activities include a tree lighting ceremony, breakfast with Santa & reindeer, a parade and a New Year’s Eve celebration.  The 30th annual Holiday Shoppers Fair in Ocean City is scheduled for November 23-25 with an admission fee of only $3.  What a great way to get a jump start on your holiday shopping!

Having a holiday party and need a place to hold it?  Check out 2012 Restaurant of the Year, Mister Paul’s Legacy, in Salisbury (the old Webster’s 1801) as a venue.  Enjoy BOGO ½ off entrée when you dine in before Dec 31.  They offer family style fried chicken on Tuesday nights, karaoke on Wednesday nights, prime rib with 2 sides on Thursday nights, and entertainment on Saturday night.  The Holiday Jubilee is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12 at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center.  It costs just $25 per person and includes food and non-alcoholic beverages, while guests are free to bring their own “spirits!”

Have a hard to shop for person on your Holiday list?  Think about purchasing gift cards from Soft Touch Car Wash and save 20%.  Need vehicle maintenance instead?  Absolute Auto Repair in Princess Anne offers an oil and filter change for only $21.90.  Carl King Tire also offers a lube/oil/filter change for $22 (page 11).

Could you help save a life?  Absolutely!  Every 90 seconds, someone dies from cardiac arrest, and you could prevent that by taking one of the upcoming First Aid/CPR classes sponsored by the American Heart Association and Somerset County Department of Emergency Services.

Snacking is one of my downfalls, and are there some awesome snack coupons in this Frugals edition!  Baskin Robbins has any cone BOGO for 99c, Bagel Bakery is offering a FREE 12oz coffee with any $4 purchase (page 24).  You can get a drink and chips/cookies for FREE when you buy a regular footling sub after 5pm at Subway in Crisfield or Pocomoke (page 31).

The thought of home repairs can be quite daunting, but not when you have the current edition of Frugals in your hand.  Hickman Heating, Plumbing & Air is offering $25 off a heating system check up (page 32), Austin Cox has several offers available on page 9, including a FREE water test, and HandyPro has a $50 off any job located on page 42.

Don’t forget to enter yourself in the drawing for $50 worth of LORA gift certificates just by “liking” Frugals on Facebook.  One winner will be drawn during the months of October, November & December and notified via Facebook.  Don’t forget to spread the word to your friends, too!

Back by popular demand!

Because of the overwhelming response in August to the FREE haircuts for kids in K-6th grade, beginning on November 4, it will be offered every Sunday at participating JC Penney hair salons.

We had our kids' hair cuts done on Labor Day weekend (the deal had been extended at that time due to the response), and I was pleased.  Call your local salon to set up an appointment.

Coastal Kids consignment fall sale!

The Coastal Kids Consignment fall sale this this week!  It's being held at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center (Midway room) again, but NEW this year is the Berlin even to be held at the old Harley Davidson building.

If you are a new parent, pregnant with your FIRST child, a consignor, or a volunteer, you are entitled to a pre-sale shopping pass (possibly extras), which gets you access to purchase items before the sale actually opens to the public.

Consignors who volunteer can also earn 5% more profit just for fulfilling their 4 hour work shift!  If you sign up for 2 shifts, you can earn 10% more profit!

Can't make it to the pre-sale & think all the "good" stuff will be gone?  Not to worry...also new this year is a re-stock after the pre-sale so shoppers shopping after the pre-sale can still get their hands on some GREAT deals!

If you haven't ever been to this event, you have got to check it out!  I look forward to it every 6 months, and this is my 3rd time selling/volunteering.  On average, I profit around $200 from each sale, and usually sell all but a few items I take in.

Sale hours are Thursday & Friday (Sept 13 & 14) from 9a-6p, and Saturday (Sept 15) 9a-1p.  As always, there is NO admission fee.  Visa/Mastercard accepted.

For more information or to sign up for the Berlin event (Sept 27-29), go to their website.

Frugals--Summer edition

If you’re like me, you look forward to the beginning of each quarter because it means a new edition of the Frugals publication is out! However, I seem to have a hard time locating one the first week or so. I guess everyone else is as excited as I am about it and just beats me to the punch in picking one up. This time, I checked several locations, including Super Giant, Red Door Sub Shop, and 2 different Food Lions, until I finally managed to get one from the Health Department!

With the temperature being as high as it’s been the past week or so, pretty much everyone I know has been trying to find a way to keep cool, with as little cost as possible. On the inside cover, you will find coupons good towards admission at Berlin’s Frontier Town water park & golf area, as well as their western theme park. I took my kids a few weeks back & they LOVED it! Heck, if you’re the camping type, why not stay at the campground, and save $15 on a weekly rental!

Delmarva Discovery Center in Pocomoke is another awesome place for kids to learn cool new things and have fun at the same time. And, membership is one of the cheapest around, too ($40 for your entire family for a year)! They are hosting a special fundraising event called Stars Soul Rock & Roll on September 15 at the Nassawango Country Club in Snow Hill. Your ticket includes an island theme dinner, dancing, 2 premium liquor tickets and an enjoyable evening. Hurry though, tickets are selling fast, and there is limited seating available.

I’ve posted about it before, but the annual fall Coastal Kids Consignment Sale is coming up right around the corner! In addition to the Salisbury sale, this year, a new event in Berlin will be held, location to be announced. Check out their website for details on all the upcoming events.

Are you the crafty type? Know someone who is? Check out Handmade Galleria located across from the Twilley Centre in Salisbury. They feature jewelry, handmade home décor and MUCH more! You can even save an extra 20% off your purchase of $40 or more if you use the coupon located on page 17. Inside the store is another business, Coyote Custom Woodworking, which features unique hand carved items. There’s a BOGO ½ off (buy one, get one) coupon available for this store.

Because it’s summer, there are plenty of carnivals and outdoor festivities going on. The Chincoteague Blueberry Festival is July 20-22, and features music, food, fun kid stuff, Ultimate Blueberry pie, and of course, fresh blueberries! Save $1 off adult admission with the coupon on page 52. If you’re planning on making a day of it, stay for the Chincoteague Fireman’s Carnival and save $3 of their ride wristband (coupon on page 50). The Sharptown Fireman’s Carnival runs July 26-August 18, and there are coupons for savings on their rides located on page 19. The Great Pocomoke Fair is August 2-4 and will have a tractor pull, horse show, food, exhibits, contests, rides, and harness racing! Let’s not forget the annual Blessing of the Combines in Snow Hill on August 4 at 11am. There will be a parade of the local farmer’s combines, a “Scales & Tales” presentation by the Pocomoke River State Park, a petting barnyard, wagon hay rides, children’s tractor pull, live entertainment and LOTS of GREAT food! This event is FREE to the public. The Worcester County Fair is the weekend right after that from August 10-12 in Byrd Park (Snow Hill) and is another FREE admission event featuring plenty of great food, livestock exhibits, classic cars, music, horse show, contests, games, and demonstrations. Riverside Carnival, held at the St Francis de Sales Parish from September 20-22, offers free admission to those attending, but you can also save $3 on rides with their coupon on page 26. Breckenridge Farms (Linkwood, MD) has an amazing 9 acre corn maze and pumpkin patch, paintball and even an ATV park. Too hot for you outside and looking for something to do inside? Then check out the Wicomico Public Library or the Worcester County Library as they often have FREE events for individuals of all ages, including comedians, ghost hunters, talent shows, and even an inflatable planetarium!

Is “antiquing” your thing? What about scouring a consignment shop to find yourself something “new to me”? A 2nd Time Around, located in Pocomoke offers 20% off your total purchase of over $15 with the coupon on page 37. Season’s Best Antiques in Salisbury is looking to fill vendor space and is offering a FREE month of space rental when you sign a 3 month agreement, which is up to a $300 value! Finders Keepers in Salisbury is offering 15% off your purchase there (coupon located on page 16). Somerset Choice Antiques Gifts & Books in Historic Princess Anne features a wide variety of antiques, gifts, books, collectibles, home décor and other unique finds.

Are you one of those people who clips coupons, but can never remember to bring them with you? Then try texting GOOSE to 410-713-4500 to begin receiving instant discounts redeemable at all Goose Creek food stores.

No matter what your fancy, Frugals magazine can save you some money as it has something in it for everyone! Be sure to pick up your copy today. Don’t want to wait to get a hard copy, check out the Frugals website at www.frugals.biz.
