Selling used items

The May edition of Real Simple magazine had a great article in there about where to sell things, so I wanted to share some of the highlights of the article.

Best Place to Sell Stuff
clothes—ebay
shoes/handbags—consignment Try narts to find a consignment shop in your area
furniture—craigslist
electronics—yard sale if 5 years older (or more), sell newer items on craigslist
household items—yardsale
books/DVDs/CDs—amazon
antiques—auction
baby stuff—craigslist, classifieds
kid toys—amazon, swap w/ friends
collectibles—ebay (if not too heavy to ship), auction
decorative items—ebay, craigslist
jewelry—local shop, auction
instruments—music go round, craigslist
patio furniture/garden equipment--craigslist, classifieds
sports equipment—play it again sports, craigslist

Before you sell your items, there are some things you can do to them to help increase their desirability.

Make sure all parts are still there (game pieces, electric cords, etc)
Wash/iron clothes, polish silver, remove stains
Remove any names on books/clothes (this may mean removing the tag)
Delete personal info & wipe computer hard drive clean (download FREE disk-wiping software here)

If all else fails and you're simply unable to sell your items, consider donating for a tax credit:

Dress For Success—collects professional women’s clothes & distributes to disadvantaged women

Homeless Shelters—nonperishable food, clothes, personal care items
Go International Book Project—uses books in excellent condition for literary programs around the globe

National Cristina Foundation—distributes used computer equipment to local nonprofit organizations, schools & public agencies across USA

Go here for a $5 mail in rebate form on a Clorox toilet wand. There are also $5 coupons out there for this item as well, which should make it FREE or very cheap! This one doesn't expire until 2/1/11, so there's still plenty of time let to find a good deal!

If you head over to their website, there are printable coupons there to help you save some money when making your purchases. This rebate is good until 6/30/10, so there's still plenty of time left on this one as well.

Kmart Super Doubles coupons

On my Facebook page, I had a fan ask if I could post about the coupons I was saving for Kmart Super Doubles that is scheduled to start on Easter Sunday. Read this post for a link to the national list of stores participating. Yard Sale season!

On the first day of Spring, I headed out to the local flea market in hopes of making a quick buck by selling my stockpile items. Turns out I got there too late (7am) & there were no available spots for sellers. I've been there several times before, arriving at the same time, and have never had a problem in finding a place to sell....the warm spring morning had everyone out & about with the same thought as I.

Well, the stuff is still packed in my car, and I'm hoping that this Saturday I can get there early enough to find a spot and sell some stuff. Not only does it earn me some money but it also makes room for new items in my stockpile, which is important since Super Doubles are next week at Kmart!

If you or someone you know is having a yard sale, please post the information in the comments section so others can take advantage of your deals. Happy (deal) hunting!
